Rest

“So now the Lord pleads, 'Stop right where you are! Look for the old, godly way and walk in it. Travel its path, and you will find rest for your souls. But you reply, 'No, that's not the road we want!'"  Jeremiah  6:16 I've made it a point recently to go for drives with no particular place to go. No time crunch. No agenda. Just open windows and radio on. I'll turn somewhere thinking, "I wonder where this road leads." Off I go to find out. I've learned that every road ends up somewhere even if it's nowhere ... as in a dead end.   Through his prophet Jeremiah, God spoke about paths and roads too. We never just end up somewhere. We've made numerous choices along the way that have taken us exactly where we are right now. God told his people that the godly way, the right path laid out by God himself is the one that leads to a rest-filled soul. Yet, we reject it. "That's not the road I want!", we say. What's the condition o...

All

“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart." Jeremiah 29:13 Kids and chores are frequently unhappy companions. I remember trying to avoid them as a kid and when I couldn't, I would stumble and grumble my way through them. Unfortunately, my children have inherited this proclivity to avoid chores as well. To describe their effort when they are not able to avoid them as "halfhearted" would be overstating the reality. Reflecting on the verse for today, it would appear that halfheartedness is not confined to my personal experience. God led the prophet Jeremiah to include the word "all" in this well known and oft repeated verse. The promise of divine discovery is reserved for the passionate pursuer. The one who must, the one won't be distracted, the one who perseveres, the one who is undivided in focus ... This one will find. God made you. He loves you and he is for you. Your best is the desire of his heart. He has not, is not and will...

Success

"I knew you before I formed you in your mother's womb. Before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as my spokesman to the world. ... for you must go wherever I send you and say whatever I tell you."  Jeremiah 1:5,7b  I've never said to myself, "Wouldn't it be great to be a press secretary or spokesman for a major political figure?" Honestly, what a terrible job! Everytime you stand up to speak, at least half of the people already hate you. Everyone is waiting to pounce on any poorly worded statement. Each word is dissected, twisted, misinterpreted, or taken out of context to fit the agenda of a particular reporter or editor. In addition to all the negativity, how would one even know if they were successful? It's just plain depressing. No wonder there's such a turnover in that job. Welcome to Jeremiah's world. He was God's spokesman to a people who had no interest in what God had to say. Most of his preaching and prophesies were...
