Delight
"Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires
of your heart." Psalm 37:4
There are moments in life I would love to bottle up and pop open
to enjoy again and again particularly on those days when a smile is pretty
hard to find. I treasure many memories from my childhood and youth that even at
the time, I didn't want them to stop. The pivotal moments of life
-- marriage and birth of children. Adventures and challenges overcome.
Awesome moments of wonder in God's magnificent creation. All bring sweet
delight.
David wrote of desires and delight. He coupled them together in
such a way to recognize the primacy of delight. There is a promise to
those who choose the Lord as their greatest delight. It's a promise that only
he can make and only he can keep: to give you your heart's deepest desires.
When the Lord is our delight, our hearts will want what he wants to give us.
There will be a beautiful harmony on the inside.
What are you delighting in these days? What competes with
Jesus for the affection of your heart? If we are off point on our
delighting, we will be off point on our desiring. David's son Solomon wrote
that "desire fulfilled is a tree of life." Interesting picture isn't
it? Life, fruitfulness, staying power and vibrancy begin with an unwavering
delight in Jesus. All other delights lead us to desires that will ultimately
break our hearts.
