Everywhere

“He took Joseph and threw him into the prison where the kings's prisoners were held. But the Lord was with Joseph there, too, and he granted Joseph favor with the jailer."  Genesis 39:20-21 Heartbroken, I made my way back home. All visions of future visits and deeper relationship evaporated in the face of the cold hard reality that this young lady was no longer interested in spending time with me. I felt sad, rejected and alone. Thankfully, God met me there in my sadness. In addition to that gift, the very next girl I would connect with would eventually be my "till death do us part."  Joseph knew rejection and sadness too. In addition, he was betrayed, lied about, and thrown unjustly into prison. Dark days to be sure. In that place of darkness, however, he was not abandoned. He was not outside of God's favor. He found his most difficult of roads was not one he had travel alone. We all have difficult stretches to walk in this life. Some we've created. Some oth

Such People

“while Jesus was having a meal in Matthew's house, many tax collectors and other outcasts came and joined Jesus and his disciples at the table. Some Pharisees saw this and asked his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with such people?" One evening during my youth ministry days, I remember staring at this kid showing up to youth group and I said, "Uh-O." He had these clothes that were torn and oddly assembled with a dog collar and matching wrist collars. It was his hair, however, that really captured my attention. He had a mohawk made of five to six ten inch high multi-colored spikes. "Better keep an eye on him", I said to myself. In time, I came to know him as one of the most Jesus-centered teenagers that I had ever met. Our verses today reveal that prejudice and "better than you" attitudes have been around an awfully long time. Jesus didn't prescribe to that type of thinking. He welcomed anyone. He didn't put up any artificial bar

Worry

“Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God's peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus."  Philippians 4:6-7 I used to be very confused when people told me about panic attacks. I'm ashamed to admit this thought to you, but I used to think that panic attacks were for the weak. I've since learned that they are a common experience for people who are well ... in a word, human. My first bout with them caught me totally by surprise and I honestly had no idea what was happening. I couldn't catch my breath or stop my heart from racing wildly. My prayer life went to a whole new level that day.  In our verses for today, Paul dealt head on with the "life muzzler" of worry. His instruction? Pray more. Ask more. Thank more. Worry loves a vacuum, an idle heart and mind. Paul told us to
