Trusting God

“This is what the Lord says: 'Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who draws strength from mere flesh and whose heart turns away from the Lord. That person will be like a bush in the wastelands; they will not see prosperity when it comes. They will dwell in the parched places of the desert, in a salt land where no one lives. But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.'"
Jeremiah 17:5-8

On more than one occasion, I've found myself completely parched, thirsty beyond the ability to ignore it. In my efforts to quench my thirst, I've gone to a drinking fountain seeking relief only to discover that it wasn't working. Waterless. An impostor! It looked the part, but once tested, it came up dry.

In our verses for the day, God draws a sharp contrast between those who trust in man and those who trust in Him. The curse of the human-trusters? They continually take their thirst to the water fountain that has no water. Simply maddening. The blessing of the God-trusters? Regardless of the most oppressive heat waves of life, their well of refreshment never runs dry.

Trust is a precious commodity. Its value simply cannot be measured for it carries implication for this life and the life to come. In whom, will we place our trust? Since no one is bigger or smarter or stronger than God ... Since no one has ever gone to a cross for us other than Jesus, perhaps we should choose him. Today, we will decide between thinking, saying, and doing what we want or what God wants. These decisions will reveal our trust choice. Choose wisely. It would sure be sad to be left standing at the end of the day, parched, at the same dry water fountain.

Grace and Peace,

Tom
