Life

"Since Christ lives within you, even though your body will die because of your sin, your spirit is alive because you have been made right with God. The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as he raised Christ from the dead, he will give life to your mortal body by this same Spirit living within you." Romans 8:10-11

I was very careful to let the landscaper know that my wife and I are not good with plants, bushes, trees ... basically anything green. Watering, weeding and feeding plants are simply not our strong suit. We needed something planted that was foolproof. He did a fantastic job finding those tough, hard to kill plants. I might trim them up every once in awhile, but basically they are on their own to fend for themselves. There are times, however, when rain is sparse that I will pause to check in on them. I look for any signs of life -- a green leaf, a flower, a bud, basically anything that says, "I'm still kickin'". Once found, I smile and go on with my day.

In our verses for the day, we find this subject of life brought up in a very remarkable way. This physical life is quickly dismissed and our attention is drawn to something far more significant -- spiritual life. It's a life that is given to us when we put our faith in Jesus. It is brought to us by the Spirit of God himself, who lives within us. He goes on to tell us, "O, by the way, the physical life that you will lose because of sin will be returned to you one day." How? By the same Spirit that returned Jesus' life back to him after he had died on the cross. This very same Spirit that indwells all who have received Jesus as their Lord and Savior.

I wonder, if someone were to inspect our lives today, would there be any signs of life ... not are we breathing or is our heart beating, but rather signs of the work of the Spirit ... love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control. Is there any humility, sacrifice and courage to be found? Is there strength under fire? Is there an adventure with God that is under way? How about it ... what do you say we take our place among the living?

Grace and Peace,

Tom
