Breakthrough

“David longed for water and said, ‘Oh, that someone would get me a drink of water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem!’ So the three mighty warriors broke through the Philistine lines, drew water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem and carried it back to David. But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out before the Lord.’  II Samuel 23:15-16

Breakthrough. The word is irrepressively positive. Our lives are measured and treasured by our breakthrough moments ... riding the bike without training wheels, acing the impossible exam, standing true when tested, defeating the demons of addiction ... Facing down my fears of the unknown have provided some of my most treasured breakthrough moments in life. What about you?

Our verses for the day provide a picture of what a breakthrough looks like and who gets to experience them. David's hometown was in trouble. The dreaded Philistines had shown up. David was in hiding missing his hometown well water. He expressed this longing in the words of one thinking out loud. His men, faithful to his every wish, acted. Not just any men, mighty warriors. They broke through the enemy line and drew water from the well. David so broken by their love, devotion, and courage dared not to drink the water. It was only fitting for the King of Kings.

Today, you and I stand at the threshhold of a breakthrough. The terrible and wonderful truth about breakthroughs is they require us to remove ceilings that have blocked our vision, to move passed pits that have halted our progress and to strip off the snares that have stolen our spirit. Breakthroughs are for the mighty. The mighty are those who are walking with the Almighty, those who can echo the words of Paul, "I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength!"

Grace and Peace,
